Sector Residential
Location Kensington, London
The Grade II* Listed building on Kensington Square is located within the Kensington Square Conservation Area. The proposal was to restore and convert the office back into use as a single private house and extend where possible.
Our approach, through meticulous research, was to carefully reinstate original Georgian features whilst incorporating modern design elements. The building had undergone numerous damaging alterations in the past, but working alongside conservation specialists, we were able to restore it to its former grandeur and improve its environmental performance.
A new basement to the house was created and carefully designed around protected trees within the garden and in keeping with the house layout. We were able to maximise the natural light going into the basement whilst not losing the garden space by a unique cantilevered glass staircase under a lightwell accessing the basement from ground level and putting a garden skylight creating a wonderful double-height space. To reduce the impact of adding a basement in Kensington and Chelsea a huge green roof was created to an existing flat roof and soakaways to the garden can delay water runoff on the surface.
As project manager on this, we were able to coordinate input from builders, craftsmen, structural engineers, interior designers, eco assessors and conservation specialists throughout every stage of the build.
